Incarcerated individuals have a few communication channels they can use to stay connected with family and friends on the outside. They can keep in contact through in-person visits, phone calls or electronic messaging, which they access via tablet-like devices. But most forms of remote communication incurs charges, posing a financial burden to some families. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, American households pay $1 billion worth of fees to call family members in prison every year.
