“A Prison Writer’s Guide to Media Writing” is a first-of-its-kind journalism handbook for incarcerated writers. Written by veteran journalists and educators Yukari Kane and Shaheen Pasha, the guide includes 14 instruction modules, stories from incarcerated writers, a style guide and a duty of care section.

The handbook is an excellent resource for journalism education, whether as a textbook for a course or a resource guide for prison journalists.

PJP has found that journalism training provides workforce readiness and professional development skills for writers because it teaches them to communicate effectively in writing and speaking, shows them how to back up assertions with facts, challenges them to receive constructive feedback and incorporate it into their work, and holds them accountable as part of a professional community.
