Medical Care
The 8th Amendment requires prison officials to provide adequate medical care to incarcerated individuals, but the quality of care varies across states and amongst correctional facilities. Some institutions have infirmaries on-site while others hire independent doctors or have contracts with private care providers and hospital staff. A majority of prisons have adopted a hybrid system.
