I was walking around the prison track when two middle-aged prisoners slowed to a halt in front of me. I could see them staring at something in the sky. When I looked up, I saw a daytime full moon and an airplane gleaming in the sun.
The plane’s vapor trail lined up its course to pass directly over the moon. As it did, one man’s mouth dropped open. He started hopping around, tapping his friend on the shoulder.
“Whoa! Did you see that?” he said. “I didn’t know that airplanes flew so high they flew behind the moon!”
I laughed to myself because the plane, in the sunlight, was momentarily invisible in front of the moon.
The excited man’s friend then confidently shared his knowledge of aerodynamics: “Oh yeah, they sometimes do on international flights.”
